Tourism in the Region

The region

Soure, a region privileged for its natural beauty

Soure is a Portuguese village in the District of Coimbra, in the Center region and sub-region of Baixo Mondego, capital of a municipality with 270 km2 and with a population of 20 thousand inhabitants.

Geographically the Municipality of Soure has two areas with very different characteristics:

• The Serrana area, which is part of the Sicó sub-region, consists of the parishes of Tapéus, Degracias and Pombalinho. The production of quality cheese remains one of the characteristic activities. Also noteworthy is the operation of limestone extraction units and an industrial unit for roasting dried fruits.

• The rest of the municipality, which is flatter, dominated by the alluvial basins of the Anços, Arunca and Pranto rivers, with greater soil richness and a greater proximity to the main communication axes of the region and the country, naturally, has presented a higher index of development, based on a diversified framework of activities at the sectoral level.

You can also taste the varied gastronomic offer of the twelve parishes in the municipality of Soure.

Regional Gastronomy

In the center of Portugal, where green forests coexist and some of the oldest historical-archaeological remains in the country, we find great itineraries to explore.

Lamprey is the most famous delicacy in the region, giving its name to rice and deserving a festival that is organized around February / March each year. In addition to lamprey, river fish and other specialties are common.

You will also be able to taste the varied offer of conventual sweets that history has been in charge of bringing up to the present day. An exponent of the gastronomy of the Center of Portugal is the suckling pig from Bairrada, accompanied with sparkling wine from the same region.

And how to forget the famous Pastéis de Lorvão, delicious examples of the conventual sweets from the Lorvão region, and the Lampatana, a dish made from sheep meat, since time immemorial a gastronomic specialty in the municipality of Mortágua.

It belonged to the orders of the Templars (who had their headquarters here) and of Christ, being the target of several demolitions and reconstructions over the centuries, until finally passing to the possession of the autarchy.
